Hip Mo' Toast, Perth's hippest jazz combo, is proud to announce the launch of its third cd release - 'Uptown Tight' - a recording that embodies jazz sophistication and contemporary cool.
Since its formation in 1997, Hip Mo' Toast has wowed audiences across the country with it's delicious blend of devastating musicianship and drop-dead style - at events including the Fremantle International Jazz Festival and at acclaimed venues like Perth's Greenwich, Bennett's Lane in Melbourne and Sydney's Basement.
... and the band has received a swag of awards including 2000 and 2001 West Australian Music Industry Awards for Best Original Jazz Act and the Perth Jazz Society's 2001 award for artistic excellence and innovation.
'Uptown Tight', the off-beat quintet's first full-length studio album, is a world-class recording that draws from a vast realm of jazz-influenced musical styles.
From the deft swing of the title track, to the funky groove-driven Anyone Home and the cheesy but infectiously hip Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo, the album resonates with spirit and humour and displays an exciting confidence and maturity.
As with their previous recordings, 'uptown tight' superbly showcases the honeyed vocals of chanteuse Libby Hammer and the awesome skill of her players, but also on show here are the band's substantial song writing talents...
7 of the album's 12 tracks are original tunes - three by bassist Shane Pooley, two from drummer Peter Guazzelli and one each from saxophonist Graeme Blevins and pianist Grant Windsor.
Recorded using virtually no overdubs, 'Uptown Tight' displays the improvisational strengths of the group and is great evidence of their live energy and oomph.
